Prescription Drug diversion has become a National Epidemic. In doing our part to stem the epidemic, the physicians of Erica L. O’Donnell D.O., P.A. have adopted the following policy for the prescription of Controlled Substances. We will only prescribe these medications to patients who have on file current imaging studies, surgical history, and/or a work up and recommendation from a Pain Management Doctor and/or Psychiatrist, or pathology that demonstrates a need for these drugs. If your medical history and records do not contain any of the above, your doctor will discuss with you others treatment options. A reminder, ALL patients receiving prescriptions for controlled drugs are subject to random drug testing.
Many insurance companies promote that the patient is entitled to an annual wellness evaluation. As defined by the insurance companies, this yearly evaluation is a wellness visit. At your visit, the doctor or their staff will review your immunizations and screen you for age and gender appropriate conditions. The provider will then order any tests that he/she feels are needed to diagnose any condition/s you may have. A yearly (annual) evaluation does not include any treatment of previously diagnosed conditions. If the provider discusses or treats you for these pre-existing problems, the insurance companies will this visit as problem-focused claim. Based on the guidelines of the Affordable Care Act of 2010, there are no deductibles or co-pays associated with the annual wellness evaluation.
What you might expect at your Annual Wellness Evaluation: • Review of Medical, Family, and Social History, as well as Habits • Medication Reconciliation • Review of Immunizations • Lab and Procedure Orders • Screening and Prevention Guidelines • Discussion of healthy lifestyle including diet, exercise, and smoking and alcohol consumption
What not to expect at your Annual Wellness Evaluation: The following items are addressed in what the insurance companies refer to as a problem-focused visit. • Review and management of pre-existing conditions • Any surgical procedure • Evaluation of new complaints • Refills of medications that you are currently on
It is fraudulent to ask a doctor to code a wellness evaluation if problems are addressed.
